Android Happenings

I love my G-1 phone and the Android operating system. I think that Microsoft is missing the point of what makes Android so successful. I look at it in terms of Apple being like the North Korea of platforms, WinMoPho like China, and Android is, all BS aside, the United States. Who drove the PC market for years? The 3D graphics card market?

I am going to the Android Development meetup tonight.
http://www.nyalt.net/events/15247328/?eventId=15247328&action=detail#comments

I met Greg Shackles at the NYC Code Camp last weekend and got to talk to him a little bit about my Android. For this meetup in particular, I would like to understand a little about the advantages of development on MonoDroid and C# versus development using Eclipse and JAVA from a n00b perspective.

To Microsoft's credit, I think that Microsoft's products are way ahead of their time. It's like an alien dropped some shit on earth about 4 years earlier than the competition, embracing the second mover advantage, and with a crappy marketing campaign. It's WEIRD and oxymoronic. Do they let the product speak for itself? I'm in. Look at the ZuneHD. It's so beautiful, yet with usability issues, that it brings tears to my eyes, but Android is buggy and usability is a small price to pay. The hot nerdy chick that came to the ball too late, wearing a one-off dress, and never got asked to dance because all the guys were too wasted.

I heard of the Evil Operator app yesterday, thanks Nigel. This app fits in a series of apps that really take advantage of a phone OS. It is the Chinese Connection phone prank app. I think that model to monetize an app is pretty decent. It belongs with the vocoder apps, number screening apps, and other apps that you can program because it is a phone.

my phone had build dmd64 …

check out this video
http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-root-the-htc-g1dream/
at this point (i think), i had to have a SIM with internet (don’t worry, after this you will have rooted your phone), even if it’s pre-paid (on t-mobile).  When you complete this you will be at RC29.

from there, i hit i a couple of links:

I’m running the chromatic custom build right now. and i am liking it so far, but this phone is slow as phuck (with the 500Mhz proc). i will be looking for some tweaks …

Accessory Review: Body Glove Shield Protector Case W/ Belt Clip Kick Stand

by G 18. February 2010 03:44

Crap! Twice. This accessory case makes the phone look a lot cooler - like a military device or something of that nature, and the kickstand is a big plus at the office. The drawback is that you need to be VERY watchful of your phone because it snaps off the belt clip too easily and it will probably be too late to find your phone by the time you notice that it is gone! It happened to me twice while biking and on Halloween night and inadvertently caught it falling off a couple of times getting in/out of cars.

There is a better belt accessory that I will post about soon here http://androidhot.com/archive.aspx

Major Tip: Run Fewer Connected Desktop Widgets

To help your Android run better, run fewer connected widgets. The connected widgets are those that access a webservice over the network. I'm thinking about Finance, Weather, Calendar, etc. as a widget, not a shortcut. This will have noticeable impact on your day-to-day experience. My Android had almost slowed down to a crawl until I cleaned up these widgets.

G-1 Review - Part 1: Introduction

by G 14. January 2010 07:36

First post here. I'm following Android and mobile os development in general. I'm primarily a .net developer and love to see cool stuff - also in code :)

I have been using G-1/Android 1.6 for about the last 6 months and, although I am less than impressed with it for daily use, still recommend it for any one of its outstanding qualities as a smartphone development platform.

Hardware: check
I'm not sure where this phone stands out against the rest with respect to its hardware features, but it has a trackball, a color touch screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a physical slide-out keyboard, a gyrometer or something of that sort that lets you tilt the phone to get a reading, and a GPS receiver.

Operating System and SDK: check
Android Cupcake Donut (1.6) is a cool platform for smarthphone applications.

The SDK for Android was easy to install. It is a plugin for Eclipse. For more info check out:

Using this phone every day is kind of a pain in the ass! I mean that the more I use it, the more that its hardware and developer shortcomings become evident.  The OS can't handle that much stuff going on, but (i need to drive an iPhone this year) if you keep your desktop free of network calls (see apps reviews), the phone will pretty much be great. It is defiinitely not as great as the old blackberry (i need to drive a newer blackberry this year) for contact management and calls, but i think that it would fill in everything that the Blackberry wants with a killer phone app - and a scroll wheel it needs a scroll-wheel and cursor arrow keys (edited to complete thought; etf) :)

In G-1 Review - Part 2: Everyday usage, i will cover everyday usage of the G-1/1.6 like a phone and a connected desktop on-the-go.
